Hillcrest hosts early bird race

KALONA — Hillcrest Academy hosted its early bird cross-country race Tuesday on the school’s campus and in the nearby Joetown Woods. Afternoon showers made the course muddy.

Hillcrest’s Leah Bontrager finished eighth for the Ravens in 25 minutes, 25 seconds. She was one of 26 runners to finish the girls varsity race won by freshman Ani Wedemeyer of City High in 21:05 over two-time defending champion and meet record holder, Rowan Boulter, also of City High. City High won the girls team race with a perfect score of 15.

Winfield-Mount Union had the highest area finishers with Gabe Hemsworth running to fourth place in 20:08 and teammate Kohlby Newsom was fifth in 20:21.

Collin Miller finished in the Top 10 in the boys varsity race to lead Hillcrest Academy.

Gavin Hall of Cedar Rapids Jefferson won in 18:36. Jefferson won the team title with 25 points.

The Ravens compete next at Fairfield Thursday, Sept. 9.
