ELDON - Four Union area volleyball teams, including hosts Cardinal, descended on Cardinal High School for Saturday volleyball action. The Comets were joined by Southeast Iowa Super Conference North sides Hillcrest Academy, Highland and Pekin as well as Moulton-Udell and Louisa-Muscatine.
Hillcrest had the best showing among area teams at the event. After a 3-2 (21-25, 25-15, 20-25, 25-18, 15-13) win over Pekin on Thursday, the Ravens took down the Panthers again Saturday 2-1 (13-25, 25-20, 15-9). Hillcrest also defeated Moulton-Udell (25-6, 25-13). Niva Helmuth led the way with four kills against the Eagles while Brynna Boshart had an excellent match from the service line with seven aces.
After losing to Hillcrest, Pekin also defeated Moulton-Udell in its second match 2-0 (25-17, 25-13). The Panthers were led on offense by 10 kills from Paislee Coleman and eight aces from Ezra Parsons.
The host side split its matchups Saturday. Cardinal picked up a narrow win over Highland (23-25, 25-14, 15-12) and a loss to Louisa-Muscatine 0-2 (20-25, 17-25). Maclain Hickenbottom had seven kills over both matches.
Highland dropped both of its matches at the event. After its match against Cardinal the Huskies also fell 0-2 (22-25, 21-25) to Louisa-Muscatine. Ava Sexton had a strong day despite the defeats with 12 kills across both matches. Highland also got in the win column Thursday with a 3-0 (25-19, 26-24, 25-19) victory over WACO.
The area did have one tournament winner out of the Union’s coverage area on Saturday, as Washington went up to West Liberty to take down the tournament title.
The Demons beat Cedar Rapids Kennedy 21-16, 27-25 to take first place in the tournament, earning some revenge for a loss in pool play earlier in the day.
Washington won four other matches on the day, beating West Liberty (21-18, 21-17), Muscatine (19-21, 21-6, 15-7), Danville (21-17, 21-8) and West Liberty again (21-14, 21-14).
Both Fairfield and Mt. Pleasant fought through the Ottumwa tournament, with both teams finishing 3-2.
Fairfield spoiled Mt. Pleasant’s run in the very last game, beating the Panthers 21-19, 21-19 to earn some vengeance from two losses in tournament play earlier this season. The schools will play again in Mt. Pleasant for a Southeast Conference clash on Tuesday night.
In other games, Mt. Pleasant defeated Albia (21-19, 21-13), Davis County (21-14, 21-18) and Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont (21-19, 21-18), while falling 21-19, 21-8 to Ottumwa.
Fairfield also defeated Davis County (17-21, 21-12, 15-10) and Albia (21-13, 21-17) but fell to EBF (13-21, 22-20, 15-13) and Ottumwa (15-21, 21-6, 15-13).
Several area schools were also in action Thursday. Mid-Prairie bounced back from four losses at a tournament at Iowa City West High School with a 3-0 (31-29, 25-22, 25-19) win over Wilton to stay perfect in River Valley South play.
Keota picked up a win in South Iowa Cedar play over Iowa Valley 3-0 (25-10, 25-16, 25-19). Van Buren County was also victorious Thursday with a 3-1 (25-21, 25-15, 21-25, 25-19) win over Central Lee.
Columbus lost 0-3 (22-25, 21-25, 10-25) to SEISC North foe Wapello while New London was defeated 0-3 (10-25, 5-25, 1-25) to the No. 1 side in Class 1A Holy Trinity Catholic.
