KALONA — The Hillcrest Academy cross-country teams hosted a meet on Monday, which included fellow Union area squads Fairfield and Mt. Pleasant.
Neither the hosting Ravens, nor the visiting Trojans and Panthers could out-duel Pella, which brought two teams in each race and scooped up four of the six Top-3 finishes.
The ‘Pella Green’ team won both the girls and boys races. The ‘Pella White’ team took second in the girls’ race, and third in the boys’ competition.
The top Union area girls’ team on the day was Fairfield. The Trojan girls scored 128 points for fourth place, just eight points back of third-place English Valleys.
The Trojans were led by Carley Seeley, who took 13th place, finishing the race in 22 minutes, 46.01 seconds. Malena Bloomquist and Caroline Van Pelt also took home Top-25 spots, finishing 21st and 23rd respectively.
Bailey Belzer and Paige Bisgard finished 45th and 46th respectively for the Trojans. Emerson Porter took 60th.
Hillcrest Academy finished the girls’ race in seventh place, thanks in large part to another fantastic outing by freshman Marie Yoder. Yoder flew through the course in 21:01.49 to take fifth place overall.
Yoder was the only Hillcrest runner in the Top-25. Rya Scott came close, taking 28th. Delaney Shaw took 44th. Brynna O’Rourke was 57th, and Niva Helmuth took 70th.
Mt. Pleasant’s Monroe James paced the Panther girls in the race. James finished 30th overall with a time of 25:20.71.
Mt. Pleasant’s Nelle Peterson was just a few spots behind James, in 37th. Tatum Kane finished 55th. Jayden Yoder was 62nd, and Hailey Parrott finished 69th.
The Mt. Pleasant boys took fourth place on the day, leading all Union area teams on that side. The Panthers scored 104 points, just 22 behind ‘Pella White’ for third.
Ben Carthey paced the Panthers with an 11th-place finish. He crossed the tape in 17:51.93.
A couple of sophomores followed closely behind Carthey. Jude Dykstra took 14th, and Locken Henderson was less than three seconds behind Dykstra for 15th.
Garrett Landau took 33rd overall for the Panther boys. Coleman Mowery was 37th. Gavin Slagel finished 41st, and Drake Landau was 51st.
The Fairfield boys were sixth overall, thanks in part to a 17th place finish by Nate Konczal. Konczal was the lone Trojan in the Top-20, crossing the tape in 18:37.61.
Riley Perkins was the next Trojan across, in 31st. Gabe Tejada took 34th. Ben Boatright was 42nd. John Miller finished 49th. Andrew Myers was 52nd, and Clae Cass took 65th.
Hillcrest Academy’s Micah Gerber took 28th place in the boys’ race, finishing in 19:41.28. He was the lone Raven in the Top-30. Jesse Blossom was the next Raven down the line, in 43rd.
