KALONA — Hillcrest honored its soccer-playing seniors, then found a way to defeat visiting Washington 2-0 Monday.
Six minutes into the games, Hillcrest scored its first goal on a free kick before Washington had set up its defense. Jorge Canchola quickly took the shot and found the net after ricocheting the ball off the goal post and into the net.
Washington controlled the majority of possessions in the game as it consistently beat the Ravens to the ball.
“We possessed the ball most of the time, had great passing and took plenty of shots but couldn't find the back of the net,” Washington coach Sally Hart said. “Their goalie had some nice saves.”
Aiden Krabill’s acrobatics led to 12 saves for the Ravens. Cole Anderson and DaShaun Westphal-Edwards each played a half with three combined saves.
In the second half with the ball deep in Washington territory, Dominic Bouse sent a throw-in to Andrew Starr who directed a pass to Noah Miller. Miller lifted a shot into the far corner of the goal to make it 2-0 for the Ravens.
“We are preparing for Thursday and staying focused the entire match,” Hart said.
Washington (9-5) plays No. 16 Fairfield (9-4) in the Class 2A postseason Thursday while in 1A, Hillcrest (8-5) hosts Central Lee in the first round of substate play.
Hillcrest seniors are Dominic Bouse, Johnny Diaz, Aaron Hershberger, John Hughes, Will Kolck, Eli Ours, Aidan Yoder and manager Yanitza Gutierrez Lario.
