Though the snowy weather postponed most of the weekend’s events, high school basketball was nearly on in full on Friday night. Columbus was idle and Cardinal had its game snowed out, but all other area small school teams were in action.
Hillcrest Academy pulled out another conference win to stay unbeaten, Mid-Prairie moved to 3-0 and both WACO and Winfield-Mt. Union pulled out wins.
Notre Dame 79, New London 56
New London battled a powerful, unbeaten opponent at Charles Lorber Gymnasium, getting done in by Notre Dame in a Southeast Iowa Super Conference South Division battle.
It was Notre Dame’s fifth win in a row against New London. Before that, the Tigers had won the previous five.
Mediapolis 82, Van Buren County 34
The Warriors had their hands full, taking on a tough Mediapolis team on the road in SEISC South play.
After a 22-13 first quarter, Mediapolis went bananas in the second, scoring 36 more to take a commanding 58-22 lead into halftime. The entire second half was played with a running clock.
Will Cocherell led VBC with 12 points in the loss.
WACO 56, Lone Tree 53
The Warriors held off Lone Tree after almost blowing a 45-29 lead. The Lions came storming back in the fourth uarter but didn’t have enough to steal the win.
Hayden Shelman led WACO with 17 points and six rebounds. Holden Hughes added 15 points and six rebounds, and Kellen Shelman scored 10 points.
Winfield-Mt. Union 67, Highland 32
The Wolves rushed out to a 10-point lead in the first quarter and never looked back, en route to their third SEISC North win in four games.
Cody Milks scored 18 points for W-MU. Nicholas Sparrow had 14 points, including four 3-pointers, and Max Edwards finished with 10 points and seven rebounds.
Hillcrest Acacemy 71, Wapello 52
The Ravens went to 4-0 in SEISC North play, holding on to first place all alone.
Kale Bailey went for 26 points and nine rebounds to lead the Ravens. Rowan Miller had 13 points and 11 assists, and Gibson Scott added 10 points.
Pekin 67, Louisa-Muscatine 46
Pekin dominated L&M to move to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in conference play.
Mid-Prairie 65, West Branch 57
The Golden Hawks pulled out a victory in the River Valley South Division opener, and Mid-Prairie is now 3-0 to start the year.
Bryce Henry went off for 22 points and 14 rebounds in the win. Hudson Ehrenfelt scored 14 points, and Carson Humphrey finished with 12.
Sigourney 57, Keota 51
Sigourney and Keota went to overtime tied 51-51 in a rivalry showdown, but the Savages were the only team that scored points in the extra period.
Keota’s Porter Cave scored 18 points in the loss. Jackson Vittetoe had 14 points and eight rebounds, and Chase Haifley finished with 12 points.
