DES MOINES — It was the first individual race of the 2021 state track meet, and it was the first track championship for Mid-Prairie freshman Danielle Hostetler.
Hostetler and Mid-Prairie teammate Sydney Yoder gathered up team points for the Golden Hawks finishing first and fourth in the Class 2A 3000.
“I’m a little tired and wet,” Yoder said of the light drizzle that fell during the race.
“I felt kind of pukey,” Hostetler said. “Other than that, I wasn’t too nervous.
Hostetler was able to use public address announcer Mike Jay’s help during her race.
“Mike Jay said something about my sister so I just took it in,” Hostetler said of her older sisters Ana and Marie Hostetler. Both have won state multiple titles in the longer distance races. “I usually start out slower because I don’t want to get tired. He announced my lap time so I knew I needed to speed up a bit.”
Hostetler was second for the first four laps then kicked it into another gear for the last four laps, finishing in 10 minutes, 25.36 seconds. Yoder’s fourth-place time was 10:51.79. Ellie Rath of Union La Porte City was second in 10:39.06.
After the race, Hostetler was running drinks of water to Yoder.
“I was so thankful to have her in the same race, to warm up with me, standing on the start line with me, all that was awesome,” Hostetler said. “She did amazing.”
Yoder and Hostetler carried on a conversation during their 1-2 finish at the district meet but did not have that opportunity at state.
“There was a lot more competition here,” Yoder said. “I wanted to start with the chase pack and work my way up so that Danielle and I would finish first and second.”
Although she didn’t get that second place, Yoder was ecstatic about the race and ready to run some more.
