FORT DODGE - Four in a row for the team, five in a row for the family. It's a dynasty upon a dynasty for the Hostetlers and the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks with consecutive Class 2A cross-country girls titles at Lakeside Golf Course.
Saturday, individual champion Danielle Hostetler led the Golden Hawks in a controlled start. The strategy resulted in Mid-Prairie's fourth straight title and the Hostetlers fifth. Father Mark is coach, with freshman Danielle the third sister with a title - Anna won in 2016 before Marie followed with the next three.
'We were supposed to hang back for the first 800,” said teammate Mitzi Evans, who was eighth. 'I didn't know if we had waited too long, but we were running better by the second mile.”
The Golden Hawks 45-point total was the lowest by a 2A girls team in the 5K era, the second lowest by any girls team (4A's Johnston scored 26 to win 2016).
'Marie flew in (from Liberty University) to watch, and that made it really special,” Hostetler said. 'I think I heard her about four times during the race.”
Hostetler was about 20th at the half-mile mark, in front as she passed 1 mile, and breezed to victory in 19 minutes, 8 seconds. Addison Parrott of Danville-New London was second and the Bears finished 13th.
'I think it was just meant to come out like this,” Parrott said. 'It's been a wonderful experience. I can't imagine not doing cross-country.”
Jaden Yoder finished third, running next to twin sister Sydney, who faltered in the last 50 yards to place 11th. 'My arms and legs started feeling like chunks of ice. I just couldn't push back very hard anymore.”
The title entered Ana Fleming, who placed 33rd, fifth on the Hawks, into state history as a member of four state champions.
'I guess being one of eight is pretty special,” she said.
