CAROOLL — Many area baseball fans who can’t make it to Carroll to watch the Van Buren County baseball team will need to pay a fee to get the games online, courtesy of the Iowa High School Sports Network.
The IHSSN, which had previously allowed fans to watch games live for free will now start charging.
The move has been criticized by the Iowa High School Athletic Association and many fans on social media, many of who point out that the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union offers all state softball games for free.
The IHSSN will charge just over 10 dollars (after tax) to watch one tournament game, although a bundle package of just under 20 dollars gives a viewer the entire tournament, Classes 1A-4A.
Viewers who pay for the game(s) might also be surprised to learn that access to the contests is only temporary. According to the IHSSN, subscribers get to watch games for 30 days, but will have to pay an extra fee after that time is up for any replays.
Both the Class 1A and 2A tournaments at Merchants Park in Caroll and the Class 3A and 4A tournaments at Duane Banks Field in Iowa City will run through first round games on Monday and Tuesday.
Games begun on Monday morning on the boys’ side, as well as the girls’ side. Softball games are up and running on the IGHSAU’s YouTube page. Livestreams for the IGHSAU will stay up for replay access long term.
Van Buren County plays on Day 2 in Carroll, taking on West Lyon in the second quarterfinal game of the day. By the time the Warriors play, they’ll know who awaits the winner, as top-seeded Beckman Catholic takes on Pella Christian at 11 a.m.
