Fairfield junior Sydney Howard looked every bit the Drake qualifier Tuesday and was a major source of points for her team. Howard won gold in four events ? two individual and two relays ? and did so in commanding fashion.
Howard won both the 100- and 200-meter dashes by more than a second, finishing the 100 in a time of 12.53 seconds and breaking the tape in the 200 in 26.96 seconds. She also anchored the 4x200 to victory (1:52.92) and was the third leg on the winning sprint medley relay (1:57.73).
Others with Howard on the champion 4x200 were McKenzie McClure, Erin Thompson and Cierra Bielinski; and McClure, Thompson and Sydney Burnett teamed up with Howard in the sprint medley.
Fairfield won two additional events, with victories coming from Marisa Repp in the 400-meter hurdles and Sidney Baumann in the discus.
Repp broke 1:10 in the 400-hurdles for the first time ever, finishing in 1:09.54. The sophomore also had a big night in the high jump, taking third with her highest jump of the season (5? 0.75?). Baumann, meanwhile, had a winning launch of 110-feet, 9-inches in the discus. The junior?s throw went more than 11 feet farther than the next best throw of 99-feet, 5-inches.
The Trojans also finished second in several relays, including the 4x800, shuttle hurdle and distance medley. Thompson, Hannah Sobaski, Sesali Martin and Whitney Engle ran the 4x800 in 10:34; Repp, Grace Smith, Bielinski and Alexis Ring finished the shuttle hurdle relay in 1:12.91; and the distance medley team of McClure, Harley Cook, Martin and Brianna Redmann posted a time of 4:47.88.
Fairfield?s 4x100 was third in 55.40 seconds.
In JV action, Trojans posted wins in three events. Redmann was the open-800 champion in a varsity time of 2:43.72, and according to Hunerdosse was the night?s unsung hero.
?She ran a 2:41 relay leg [in the distance medley] and a 2:43 open, both PRs for a 2:48 former best time,? Hunerdosse said. ?That is quite a jump in time.?
The other two JV wins came from Madison Aplara in the shot put (28? 9.5?) and Miranda Metcalf topping the discus field (79? 7?). McKenna Ledger added a second-place throw of 77-feet, 10-inches in the discus.
The cloud over the meet was the health of the Trojans, who were missing key distance runner Jessica Lamb as well as others.
?Our injuries are starting to add up and that is disconcerting,? Hunerdosse said.
The Trojans are back in action Thursday at Marion. The girls will be without Howard, who will be competing in the 100-meter dash at the Drake Relays.
