WASHINGTON — The Fairfield baseball team didn’t waste any time on Thursday night in Washington.
The Trojans battered and bruised the baseball from the get go of a Southeast Conference battle, taking a Highway 1 rivalry game from the hosting Demons, 15-1 in five innings.
Fairfield scored six runs in the first inning of the game, including a two-run home run off the bat of Luke Konczal, his second bomb of the year.
“We’re really starting to come together here,” said Konczal after the win. “We’re just really locked in, and it’s great to see that.”
Fairfield scored three runs in the second inning and one in the fourth to take a 10-0 lead. Washington cut the advantage back to single digits with a run of its own in the bottom of the fourth, but a five-run output in the Fairfield fifth helped the Trojans end the game early.
Konczal finished the night 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Jacob Crew had a huge game as well, going 3-for-4 with a triple and five RBIs. Voss Richardson knocked two runners in. Aiden Westercamp and Ethan Bisgard each had an RBI, and both Dain Burkhart and Archer Kreuter hit a double.
Richardson started the game on the mound and earned the win after pitching two shutout innings. Dayson Workman gave up one unearned run in three innings of relief.
Washington had four hits in the game, all singles. Mitchell Zieglowsky, Blayze Richardson, Boden Brown and Isaac Medrano all had hits in the loss.
Conner Leyden had the only RBI of the game for Washington, and also started the game on the mound, giving up nine runs (five earned) over two innings to get tagged with the loss.
Fairfield went 1-1 over the weekend in a doubleheader against Denison-Schleswig, putting the Trojans at 17-8 overall. Fairfield is now 10-2 in the conference, one game behind Burlington after the Grayhounds suffered their first league loss on Thursday night against Fort Madison.
“We’re trying to take care of our side of things,” said Fairfield head coach Josh Allison. “Hopefully we’ll get a little help from the other schools in the conference and see what happens.”
Washington fell to both Williamsburg and Janesville this weekend. The Demons are now 4-15 overall and 3-10 in conference play.
