Huskies caught by Wolves

Thursday was a busy night for local volleyball action before this week's Southeast Iowa Super Conference Tournament gets underway Thursday with pool play and Saturday's finals at Southeastern Communuity College.
W-MU registers 17 aces
In this SEISC North Division match at Highland, Winfield-Mt. Union, which has a record of 11-4, took a win 3-0 at Highland (2-7) 25-12, 25-8, 25-16.
The visitors placed 17 aces in the match with Jenna Buffington landing seven and Melina Oepping seven. Keely Malone had 13 assists as Buffington killed 11 balls. The Wolves' defense was all over with digs from Kyndal Townsley (9), Buffington (8), Jami Wilkerson (7), Keetyn Townsley (6) and Kayla Edwards (5).
Highland's Sarah Burton and Carson Mellinger hit two kills each as Dani Laughlin had five assists. Payton Brun had four blocks and Burton had 10 digs.
Golden Hawks grounded
Mid-Prairie's record is now 4-3 after it lost a close 3-1 decision at River Valley Conference foe Cascade (11-4) 25-14, 25-23, 22-25, 25-23.
Landry Pacha put up 22 assists and Ella Groenewald put down nine kills. Hawks teammates Tori Boyse and Myah Lugar combined for 15 kills. Groenewold and Boys had nine blocks between them. Maddie Edgington was the digs leader with 20 and the aces leader with three.
Mid-Prairie hosted West Branch Monday in a match that was postponed Sept. 3.
Columbus drops pair
In a three-team night at Louisa-Muscatine, the Wildcats lost to the home team 26-28, 25-16, 25-20, 25-14 and to Mediapolis 25-16, 25-11, 25-19 and now have a 6-10 record.
Jobie Lekwa put up 22 assists in the two matches and Columbus teammate Sera Vela 14. Olivia Carrier connected on 21 kills while Michelle Diaz had 11 kills and four aces. Emma Milder got to 47 digs.
Ravens downed by Arrows
In a North match, Wapello (6-7) won 3-1 at Hillcrest (1-12) after the Ravens won the first set 25-21, the visitors won the next three 25-14, 25-18, 25-14.
A combined 22 assists by Norah Yoder and Yani Gutierrez helped Esther Hughes and Sophie Marshall record a combined 14 kills. Gutierrez also had two aces and had eight kills while Grace Miller had 25 digs.
Lions over Panthers
In a North Division match, Pekin (5-5) lost 3-1 at Lone Tree (5-9) 25-21, 25-22, 17-25, 25-9.
Erika Coleman landed six aces and had eight assists for Pekin as Kendyl Noel, Taylor Gambell and Claire Roth each spiked four kills. Kadylyn Johnson dug up 27 balls and aced two. Kaylee Pfeiffer aced four serves.
Bears down Eagles
In a South Iowa Cedar League match at Keota, English Valleys (3-9) swept Keota 25-15, 25-11, 25-16.
Keota's record is 2-6. The Eagles played at Sigourney Monday, then travel to Tri-County Thursday.
