RIVERSIDE - Homecoming is a special event for high schools and the Highland Huskies made its 2020 Homecoming memorable as King Isaac Black and Queen Kayla Cerny watched their subjects produce the first win this football season.
The Class A District 6 game turned into a blowout with the Huskies rolling to a 55-14 victory over the visiting Knights of North Cedar.
'We are happy for the team with the win,” Highland head coach Scott Morel said. 'We forced turnovers and that was the difference.”
Highland intercepted three passes, one each by Luke Miller, Connor Grinstead and Owen Donovan.
Donovan helped create memories with a productive night on the field. Donovan had a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. He took that interception all the way back, running 47 yards for a touchdown. He also scored two touchdowns rushing, one form 43 yards out.
'It was a close game in the first half and we made our adjustments and took control of the game,” Morel said.
Highland had 425 yards of offense, most all of it on the ground. Donovan had two passes from Grinstead for six yards. He rushed 21 times for 221 yards. Grinstead amassed 111 yards with nine carries. Easton Schlabaugh ran four times for 45 yards and Caedon Harbison five carries for 35 yards.
'Owen was looking really good both on offense and defense,” Morel said. 'Connor had a nice game offensively. Colton Miller had a nice game defensively.”
North Cedar is 0-4 overall and 0-2 in district play. The Huskies are 1-3, 1-1 and play at No. 8 Lisbon (3-2, 1-0) Friday. Lisbon lost to Iowa City Regina 56-26 Friday.
