WINFIELD - A couple of one-loss softball teams met up Monday as the 3-1 Winfield-Mt. Union Wolves hosted the 2-1 Highland Huskies in an SEISC North Division game.
The Huskies got on the board first, but W-MU scored five runs in the middle innings to take the win 5-2.
Highland struck first when Allie Miller knocked in a run with an RBI double in the first inning. Highland kept the lead until W-MU eighth-grader Keetyn Townsley plated two with a single. After three frames, W-MU led 2-1.
Molly Miller brought two home with an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning. That stretched the Wolves' lead to 4-1. Anna Anderson brought in the fifth W-MU run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth.
Highland got one run back when Sarah Schneider hit an RBI single in the sixth inning. Highland had two runners on with two outs in the seventh but a flyout to centerfield ended the contest.
'Madie (Anderson) is a really good pitcher,” Highland head coach Carrie Wieland said. 'I just think we get nervous when she's pitching. We're fast, and we need to put the ball down. We didn't do that.”
The Huskies collected six hits off the W-MU ace. Emily Yankhe was 2 for 3 with a double and two stolen bases to lead the way. Miller and Schneider each went 1 for 3 with an RBI.
Aly Stokes was 1 for 4 with a stolen base and a run scored in the loss. Dani Laughlin went 1 for 3.
Megan Hoenig was tagged with the loss in the circle. She threw 3 1/3 innings, giving up four earned runs on eight hits, while striking out five batters. Grace Batcheller tossed 3 2/3 innings, giving up one earned run on two hits and one walk, while striking out one.
