Huskies perform well at home coed meet
Hosting its first meet since a new all-weather track was built at the Highland High School last fall, the Husky boys won their home meet on Tuesday while the girls took second place.

Hosting its first meet since a new all-weather track was built at the Highland High School last fall, the Husky boys won their home meet on Tuesday while the girls took second place.
The Highland boys won four events and scored 151 points, cruising to a 35.5-point victory.
Sophomore Evan Mahler had a big night for the Huskies, winning both the 1,600-meter run and the 3,200-meter run. Mahler won the 1,600 in 4:58.66, and he crossed the finish line in the 3,200 in 10:56.89. Teammate Keiffer Sexton also placed in both races. He took third place in the 3,200-meter run in 11:39.34, and he finished fifth in the 1,600-meter run in 5:28.03.
The Huskies had success in the distance races on Tuesday night, as senior Brad Lampe won the 800-meter run in 2:13.90. Highland?s 4x800 relay team of Zach Popham, Lampe, Matt Eden and Chris Ford took second place in 9:02.39, and the 1,600 medley relay team of Derrick Stewart, Trey Brenneman, Kody Wood and Eden was third in 4:07.23.
Highland?s 4x200 relay team of Talon McFarland, Wood, Brenneman and Stewart took first place in 1:36.32, and the quartet of Popham, Brenneman, Ford and McFarland finished second in the 4x400 relay in 3:36.30. The shuttle hurdle relay squad of Ben Bean, Gregory Barber, Tanner Vonnahme and Jesse Hootman took second place in 1:09.58, while the quartet of Barber, Wood, Brenneman and Stewart finished third in the 4x100 relay.
Ford took second place in the 400-meter dash in 54.47 seconds, and teammate Jake Tate was third in 55.58 seconds. McFarland finished fourth in the 100-meter dash in 11.75 seconds, and Stewart was fifth in 11.96 seconds. Wood tied Keokuk junior Casey Romo for fourth place in the 200-meter dash with both runners finishing in 24.64 seconds.
Senior Zach Popham took second place in the 400-meter hurdles in 59.42 seconds. Hootman came in fourth in the 110-meter high hurdles in 18.19 seconds, and Bean was fifth in 18.55 seconds.
McFarland cleared 5 feet, 8 inches to take second place in the high jump competition, and junior Jacob Wilson cleared 5 feet, 6 inches to finish third. Hootman took fourth place in the long jump competition with a leap of 18 feet, 1.75 inches, and Wilson?s jump of 17 feet, 10.25 inches was good for fifth place. Sophomore Jake Yeggy finished fourth in the discus competition with a throw of 109 feet, 4 inches, and his toss of 37 feet, 1 inch was good for sixth place in the shot put competition.
The Highland girls won six events and scored 67 points, but the Huskies finished second to Mid-Prairie, which won the meet with 119 points.
Sophomore Sam Dutton had a big night for the Huskies. She cleared 5 feet to win the high jump competition, and she was a member of two winning relay teams. The quartet of Courtnee Hahn, Cheyann Adamson, Dutton and Kassie Vazquez won the 4x200 relay in 1:54.04, and the same four runners won the 4x400 relay in 4:38.48.
Sophomore Chelsey Lampe also had a big night, winning the 1,500-meter run and the 3,000-meter run. Lampe won the 1,500 in 5:43.90, and she crossed the finish line in the 3,000 in 12:28.26. Lampe also finished third in the 800-meter run in 2:46.61, and teammate Kaitlin Hora was fourth in 2:50.38.
Senior Megan Miller won the shot put competition with a throw of 33 feet, 9.5 inches, and teammate Lexi Rodgers was sixth with a toss of 27 feet, 1.25 inches. Senior Mady Powers took third place in the discus competition with a throw of 81 feet, 2 inches, while Rodgers finished fifth with a toss of 68 feet, 9 inches. Senior Kassie Vazquez took fourth place in the long jump competition with a leap of 14 feet, 4 inches.
Freshman Briana Davis took third place in the 200-meter dash in 28.77 seconds, and she finished fifth in the 100-meter dash in 14.10 seconds. Adamson took fourth place in the 100 in 13.64 seconds. Rodgers came in fifth in the 100-meter hurdles in 20.97 seconds, and sophomore Bridget Murphy finished sixth in the 400-meter dash in 1:12.44.
Highland?s sprint medley relay team of Vazquez, Jordan Rath, Adamson and Dutton took second place in 1:57.75, and the Huskies also took second place in the 4x800 relay. The shuttle hurdle relay team of Morgan Craig, Davis, Rodgers and Laney Powers finished third in 1:26.36, and the distance medley relay squad of Courtnee Hahn, Kelsey Craig, Rath and Hora was third in 4:58.41. Highland?s 4x100 relay team of Kelsey Craig, Rath, Murphy and Davis finished fourth in 57.16 seconds.
