RIVERSIDE — Coming into their Class 1A Region 8 matchup with Lone Tree on Friday night, Highland had defeated the Lions by a combined 21-0 through the regular season.
Things this time around were a big tougher for the Huskies as just one run separated the two squads through five innings of action, but still they ended as winners 9-3.
Lone Tree opened the scoring in the top of the first inning after a lead off single and a trio of steals.
Highland was able to knot it an inning and a half later as MyLei Smith drew a walk and later scored on a wild throw while stealing third.
The Huskies continued to extend their lead through the third as an RBI groundout by Abigail Pierson scored Sarah Burton and a hit by Smith followed by a Lion throwing error to first scored both Lilly Barre and Abbi Stransky to make it 4-1.
However, Lone Tree brought it back to a one run game in the top half of the fourth on a slew of Huskies errors and an RBI groundout.
The game stayed that way for the next two innings as both the Huskies and Lions brought just four to plate through both the fifth and top of the sixth.
Things changed in the bottom of the sixth though as Highland brought nine into the box and scored five as the Lone Tree defense had a handful of errors.
Sarah Burton had a game-high three hits and four stolen bases for the Huskies.
Lilly Barre finished with two hits and an RBI. Grace Prybil and Madison Beeson each had a hit. Abigail Pierson ended with an RBI as well.
Prybil threw more than three scoreless innings in relief for Highland, giving up just two hits with two strikeouts.
Jessica Kraus threw 3.2 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits and five strikeouts.
The Huskies will now face Southeast Iowa Super Conference North champion Wapello in a regional quarterfinal on Wednesday night at the Wapello Athletic Complex.
