Huskies take down No. 12-ranked Wolves

Highland upset a ranked Winfield-Mt. Union team while Esther Hughes' home run wasn't enough for Hilcrest in softball action Monday.
Demons split with Chiefs
KEOKUK - Washington (4-9) split a Southeast Conference doubleheader with Keokuk (3-10), dropping the opener 5-3 before rebounding with a 9-1 rout of the Chiefs.
The Demons had three hits in the loss while Cara Linnekamp allowed just five, walked five and struck out five. All five runs were earned.
Kaitlyn Mitchell lashed out three singles and a double in the second game and Kinsey Duwa had a double and a single. Cameron Malichky went 3-for-5 while Halle Leyden was 2-for-4. Emmy Wenger got the win with five hits and one walk allowed. She struck out four.
Arrows target Ravens
KALONA - It took four runs in the top of the seventh inning for Wapello (8-4) to get a 6-3 Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division victory at Hillcrest (0-7).
Esther Hughes hammered out a home run and a single while Ravens teammate Sarah Miller had a single and a double. Leah Bontrager threw a complete game, giving up three earned runs, two walks and seven strikeouts.
Highland
RIVERSIDE - W-MU (4-2) lost the North Division game at Highland, 2-1, when the Huskies scored in the bottom of the 10th inning.
The Wolves got their only run on a Madie Anderson home run in the second inning off Grace Batchellor, who threw all 10 innings for the Huskies with 11 hits, no walks and three strikeouts. Anderson threw all 10 innings for the Wolves with eight hits, one earned run, no walks and 15 strikeouts.
Sarah Burton had a single and a triple while Highland teammates Dani Laughlin and Mackinze Hora each had a pair of singles.
No. 7 Comets ground Hawks
WEST LIBERTY - Mid-Prairie (0-6) lost at Class 3A's seventh-ranked West Liberty (8-1), 10-0.
Rylee Vercande and Georgia Nisly had the only hits for Mid-Prairie.
Panthers plant Lone Tree
LONE TREE - Pekin (3-3) took a North win from the Lions (4-4), 7-2.
Kylie Davis went 2-for-4 with a double and Pekin teammates Remi Duwa, Taylor Parmenter and Hannah Lucas each had two hits. Cari Duwa allowed six Lone Tree hits without a single walk and struck out two.
