WINFIELD — A pair of Union area teams clashed at Winfield-Mount Union Community School on Tuesday night as the hosting Wolves took on Highland in a Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division battle.
Both schools took home a win on the day. The Highland girls pulled away for a 49-34 victory and the WMU boys continued to roll through the conference with a 66-13 win.
The Lady Wolves gave Highland a battle early, but the Huskies would turn it on in the second have to beat WMU for the first time since 2019, snapping a 10-game series winning streak for the Lady Wolves.
WMU led 12-10 after one quarter, and the game was tied 21-21 at halftime. In the final two periods, however, Highland played its best half on both sides of the ball, outscoring the Wolves 14-8 in the third and 14-5 in the fourth.
Katie Herrig knocked down four 3-pointers and scored 16 points to lead Highland to victory. Sarah Burton filled the stat sheet once again with 14 points, 16 rebounds, four steals and two blocked shots.
Mackenzie Davis scored eight points for the Huskies. Stella Slaymaker had six. Katelyn Thomann put up three, and Hailey Brun had two.
Madisen Kellogg had another big game for WMU. She led the team with 19 points, 11 rebounds, two steals and one blocked shot. Pacey Schlee finished with six points and four assists.
Kaelyn Townsley put up five points for the Lady Wolves. Lily Freeman scored four, and Maggie Hutton led the defense with four steals.
In the boys’ game, the Wolves took control early, outscoring Highland 24-4 in the first quarter and 13-3 in the second to take a 37-7 advantage into the half.
The Huskies could never solve the Wolves’ defense. WMU held Highland to four or less points in every quarter.
Cam Buffington scored 18 points for the Wolves. Carter Loyd put up 12. Abram Edwards finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Kael Johnson had eight points. Jake Edwards scored seven. Cole Milks had eight. Gabriel Hemsworth finished with four, and Grant Anderson ended with two.
Both Highland and WMU will now head into winter break. The Huskies are 8-3 overall and 5-2 in conference play on the girls’ side, and 1-7 overall and 0-7 in the league on the boys’ side. The Wolves lead the boys’ standings at 8-1 and 7-0, and the Lady Wolves are 3-8 and 1-7.
