As the girls high school basketball season continues to dwindle down and with the state tournament in now in full swing it’s finally time to recognize those players that showed out this season.
With the release of the Iowa Girls Coaches Association District Teams, six Union area players have made the list for their outstanding play. Winfield-Mt. Union, Highland, Mid-Prairie, and Mt. Pleasant are all being represented well.
Winfield-Mt. Union leads the pack with three girls being given the distinction. Wolves, Bradie Buffington, Jobey Malone, and Keetyn Townsley are all on the list.
Buffington performed well in her junior season, leading the Wolves with a 15.0 points per game average and 9.5 rebounds.
Townsley, also a junior, had a great campaign running the point. She finished the season averaging 9.6 points per game, 2.1 assists and an outstanding 3.4 steals.
As for Malone, she ends her high school career averaging 8.8 points per game and pulling down 5.5 rebounds per game.
WMU head coach Mitch Wachs also has been recognized as the Coach of the Year for the Class 1A Southeast area.
Wachs and the Wolves finished the 2021-22 season with 19-5 overall record and a second-place finish in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North standings. The Wolves fell in the regional semifinals to Notre Dame.
Highland’s Abbi Stransky is the final Class 1A player representing the area.
Stransky put together a great junior season, leading the Huskies while averaging 12.8 points. She also tallied 8.1 rebounds per game and 2.9 assists. She and the Huskies finished the year with a record of 12-11 after losing to Montezuma in the second round of the playoffs.
Stransky had a rough ending to the 2021-22 season, going down with an ACL tear in the Huskies opening round matchup against Lisbon.
In Class 3A, Mid-Prairie’s Maddie Nonnenmann is the lone representative.
In her senior season, Nonnenmann led the Golden Hawks to an 15-9 record and came to within one game of the state tournament, before falling to Davenport Assumption in the district final.
Nonnenmann finished her high school basketball career averaging 15.8 points and 5.3 rebounds.
The final player earning the distinction is Mt. Pleasant’s Andrea Lopreato.
Lopreato had a stellar year. The junior guard led the Panthers in every statistical category. She averaged 21.3 points, 9.9 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 3.9 steals, and 1.3 blocks all while shooting 55.5% from the field.
The Panthers ended their season at 12-11 after upsetting Fort Madison in the first round of regionals and falling to Keokuk in the second.
