There are 96 high school football teams left in the state of Iowa, and only 24 of those will be at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls next month. On Saturday, each of the 96 remaining schools got to see their paths when the Iowa High SChool Athletic Association released the schedule for the next two rounds of play.
Each class broke the last 16 teams into four pods of four. Each pod will be played out over a two-week span, with the winner of each advancing to the UNI-Dome. The pods are listed A-D, and the state will match up the four winners in each class once the final four is set.
In Class 3A, the Washington Demons were placed in Pod D, which has four ranked teams. The Demons ended the regular season ranked No. 4 in The Gazette poll and No. 3 in the Associated Press. They will host No. 9/8 West Delaware. On the other side of the pod, No. 8/9 North Scott will host No. 5 Davenport Assumption.
In Class 1A, third-ranked Sigourney-Keota received a less lethal group than the Demons, at least rankings wise. The Savage Cobras will host Beckman Catholic in Class 1A's Pod D. On the other side of that pod, No. 10 Columbus Catholic will host Mediapolis.
In Class 8-Man, New London was placed in Pod C, along with two ranked teams. The Tigers will visit No. 10/NR Janesville in their next game, with the winner playing the winner of Tripoli at No. 1 Don Bosco.
