Playing its fifth match in as many days, a weary IMS boys? soccer team struggled in a 1-0 loss at Columbus on Monday evening.
Columbus (11-3-1, 9-1-1 SEISC) opened the game with a lot of energy, and its swarming defense made it difficult for IMS to establish possession of the ball. Despite the frantic pace, the match remained scoreless until midway through the first half, when Columbus junior Eric Ayala intercepted a pass, dribbled toward the IMS goal and sent it to teammate Alex Cruz for the goal.
IMS (13-6, 8-2 SEISC North) put more pressure on the Columbus goal in the second half, creating several good scoring chances, but the visitors could not put the ball in the net. Meanwhile, the IMS back line of Justin Boller, Cody Miller, Jameson Lammer, Michael Hershberger and Kirby Shetler limited the Wildcats? offensive pushes.
Freshman Miguel Sanchez celebrated his birthday with two goals and an assist in the junior varsity contest, helping IMS defeat Columbus 3-2. Sophomore Kobi Russom scored the third goal on an assist from Sanchez.
