WINFIELD ? A steady inside scoring attack and relentless rebounding inside helped the Winfield-Mt. Union girls? basketball team pick up an SEISC North Division win Tuesday night. The Wolves topped IMS, 40-25.
W-MU came out of the locker rooms on fire from inside, outscoring IMS, 11-2, in the first period. Nine of the Wolves? first period points came from the combined effort of junior posts Pearl Krieger-Coble and Lexee Hartsock.
?I think our defensive intensity wasn?t quite there in the first quarter,? said IMS head coach Kari Heusinkveld after the game. ?If we can bring our intensity from the beginning and stay focused on the defensive end, we?ll get off to much better starts.?
The Wolves outscored IMS, 10-7, in the second quarter, but IMS was showing signs of life, thanks in part to sophomore guard Suzanna Yoder who had seven of the team?s nine first-half points. After trailing, 21-9 at half, IMS was able to step it up defensively and hold the Wolves to their lowest scoring total of the game. Each team knocked down six points in the period and it was 27-15 with one quarter remaining.
The Wolves were able to continue to pound the ball inside in the fourth quarter, though, winning the period, 13-10.
All of W-MU?s 40 points came from inside the paint or at the free-throw line, something Heusinkveld said was different from IMS? first five games this season.
?In our previous games, we haven?t really struggled too much down low,? she said. (W-MU) did a nice job on the glass. I think they ended up with 12 offensive rebounds in the game that led directly to baskets.?
Krieger-Coble had a monster game, scoring 17 points and pulling down 14 rebounds in the win. She also had eight of the team?s 16 offensive boards on the game.
Hartsock finished with nine points and 10 rebounds. Karley Schlee, Lauren Jamison and Hannah Mathews scored four points apiece and Allie McArtor and Kara Wade finished with one point each.
Yoder finished the game with 10 points to lead IMS. Alyssa Hershberger had seven. Rachel Miller, Avery Blauvelt, Calli Shaw and Mia Graber each finished with two points in the loss.
W-MU moved to 3-4 with the win and will travel to Letts for a game at Louisa-Muscatine Friday, Dec. 16. IMS fell to 0-6 and will play host to that same Louisa-Muscatine team Tuesday, Dec. 20. Both of those games are set for a 6 p.m. start.
