No. 8 IMS sent its seven seniors out with a convincing 5-0 Senior Night win over visiting Burlington-Notre Dame on Monday.
It took IMS a little while to figure out the Nikes? defense, but finally, with 24 minutes remaining in the first half, senior Dillon Bender slid a pass to junior Reggie Hostetler, who scored the match?s first goal.
The Nikes sent some long balls forward in an effort to tie the match, but the IMS back line of Justin Boller, Cody Miller, Jameson Lammer and Kirby Shetler, along with Michael Hershberger, shut down most of the offensive threats, while goalie Joel Shetler snagged the shots put on goal.
As the first half wound down, IMS pushed the ball forward again. Senior Nicholas Yoder took the ball wide and then cut into the box. He found himself open, and poked a ball toward the net. Notre Dame?s goalie was unable to get to the ball before it rolled into the net to give IMS a 2-0 lead.
IMS took control of the match in the second half. Hostetler went strong to the goal on a breakaway, and as defenders converged on him, he slid the ball to Yoder, who hit the open shot. A few minutes later, Yoder beat a defender down the left side of the field before sending a pass to freshman Miguel Sanchez, who turned the ball into the net. Hostetler finished the scoring with 10 minutes left in the match.
The IMS defense shut out its seventh opponent of the season.
IMS (11-3, 8-1 Southeast Iowa Super Conference) travels to West Liberty on Thursday before hosting the SEISC tournament on Friday and Saturday.
