After rain and snow earlier in the day, Tuesday ended with some great performances on the track at Case Field as the inaugural Steve Roth Relays were held.
Coach Steve Roth said of the event, ?I thought the meet went fabulous. There was great competition and great events. I?m happy the Steve Roth Relays went well for the first time.
?I don?t care how we finished, either,? he adds. ?It?s all about personal rewards for the runners. Now they have a time established in which they can get better.?
Washington track team members did well, Roth says. ?It was pretty much a tryout for them. We hadn?t had serious practice for a few days. We had some kids who were hurt and some that are at Disney World along with some who are ineligible. It will all come together.
?It?s not how good you are early, it?s how good you are at the end. That?s what I state to them. I found out what everybody can do now so I will start moving them around and get them ready for Drake Relays.?
As for some of the events, he was pleased with how well some of the members did despite injuries or taking part in an event for the first time.
?Caleb Bex ran in two races?still has a little lingering problem with his leg. I was so pleased with Cade Hennigan in the high hurdles. It was unbelievable how well he did. He didn?t want to do it. But I told him we were going to because I knew he could and he finished well.?
The next meet for the boys is next week at West Burlington.
?We will get together Thursday and talk about what we will do there,? Roth says.
?After that meet, we will start to change things around to figure out what we really want to do and start putting things where they work.?
The meet wouldn?t have gone well if it weren?t for the workers, Roth notes.
?I have to give everybody praise for their assistance: the Athletic Director, administration, my workers, the starter, announcer Mike Jay, along with Jacob Thorius and Aaron Six. It all runs with them and they are just fabulous.
?We had a good 15 or 16 teams and we are all done by 7:30. Mother Nature cooperated with sun at the end.?
The West Burlington meet begins at 4:30 p.m. Monday, March 27.
