Iowa high school 2024 football playoffs: 2A, 1A, A, 8-Player matchups

The Iowa High School Athletic Association released its first-round of Iowa high school football postseason pairings for Class 2A, 1A, A and 8-Players on Saturday.

Six Union area small schools find themselves in the playoffs.

Those teams are Mid-Prairie in Class 2A, Sigourney-Keota in 1A, Pekin and Columbus in A and WACO along with Winfield-Mt. Union in 8-Player.

Teams qualified for the postseason based on their district standings, with the top four in 2A, 1A and A advancing.

In 8-Player, the top three earn an automatic bid. Two additional teams earned at-large spots based on an average margin system, those being Exira-EHK and Tripoli.

Mid-Prairie and Sigourney-Keota both hold first place district which means they will host.

The Golden Hawks will take on Union Community in the first round.

Sigourney-Keota will square off with West Branch.

Pekin finished second in its district, but will still play host to North Linn.

Columbus finished fourth and will head to Maquoketa Valley.

WACO finished second, but will still hit the road in a rematch against Central City, who also placed second in its district. The Warriors defeated the Wildcats early in the season.

Winfield-Mt. Union placed third in district play and will travel to top seeded Montezuma.

Bracket play will begin after the first round. The 16 winners will be grouped next Saturday. The winners of each bracket will advance to the state semifinals.

Class 5A, 4A and 3A still have one week of regular season games left. Those brackets will be released Saturday as well.
