This year marks the 10th anniversary that Shelby, North Carolina, has hosted the American Legion World Series, which began in 1926.
The American Legion Baseball World Series involves 15- to 19 year-olds on eight teams, which earned their spot via regional tournaments around the country. The teams are separated into two pools and play round-robin style within that pool from Thursday to Sunday. The top seed in each pool plays the runner-up in the other pool in the semifinals on Monday, with the two teams advancing to a one-game championship on Tuesday.
The American Legion, which has a current membership of 1.8 million veterans, was founded in 1919 on the four pillars of a strong national security, veterans' affairs, Americanism and youth programs. Legionnaires work for the betterment of their communities through more than 12,000 posts across the nation.
