MT. PLEASANT — The Iowa Wesleyan baseball team was able to slug out some frustration on Tuesday when the Eureka Red Devils came to town for a doubleheader. After losing three of four against Fontbonne over the weekend, the Tigers swept the Red Devils, winning 3-1 and 11-0.
Iowa Wesleyan trailed early in Game 1. Eureka took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth after scoring its lone run in the third.
Nick Salas tied the game with one swing of the bat in the fourth. He hit a solo blast to left field to tie the game at 1-1.
The Tigers scored one run in the fifth when Erik Kiewiet crossed the plate on an error. In the seventh, Michael Noonan reached the plate on a Dominic Gerace ground out.
Cauy Massner pitched a gem, giving up just one earned run on five hits and three walks while striking out 10 batters over eight innings. Brandon Deviller earned the save.
Corbin Broeker went 2-for-4 to lead the Tiger offense. Salas’ solo homer was the team’s only extra-base hit.
IW let loose in Game 2. The Tigers scored three runs in the first, four in the second and four in the sixth.
Trey Sherrill had a huge game at the plate. He went 2-for-3 with a homer, a double and six RBIs. Jack De Burgh was 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Broeker and Jake Leonard each knocked one in.
Everett Swinson pitched a shutout in Game 2. He gave up just seven hits and walked nobody, while striking out five.
The Iowa Wesleyan baseball team is now 8-15. The Tigers will host Webster University for four games this weekend, two on Sunday and two on Monday.
