Iowa Wesleyan men’s wrestling downed by Rams
Tigers lose first home dual of the season
MT. PLEASANT — The Iowa Wesleyan men’s wrestling team welcomed a tough Cornell College team to Ruble Arena on Thursday night, and the Rams had a little more bite than the home fans were hoping for.
Cornell won all but one match in the dual, taking down the Tigers 44-3.
After Lane Scorpil dropped a two-point decision at 125 pounds, Iowa Wesleyan’s Brendan Ferenchik delivered the Tigers’ first and only win of the night. Ferenchik outlasted Cornell’s Jayden Rael 8-7 to bring the score to 3-3 early.
Cornell took the lead on a forfeit and then won seven-straight matches to close out the night. That included two pins, a pair of technical falls, and a 13-12 Ram victory in maybe the most exciting match of the night, as Cornell’s Landen Schemmel nipped Isaac Boucher, a Cornell transfer.
Also winning a match for Cornell was former Highland prep Cory Stewart, who won by technical fall at 165 pounds.
The Iowa Wesleyan men have a tough schedule this month. Along with Cornell, the Tigers have three opponents receiving votes in the NAIA Top-20 poll, all over the course of 21 days, including a Central Methodist team that upended the Tigers on Jan. 10.
Iowa Wesleyan will travel to Waldorf Unviersity on Wednesday, in another battle with a team receiving votes. The next five teams on Iowa Wesleyan’s schedule appear in or just outside of the NAIA’s poll.
