MT. PLEASANT — The Iowa Wesleyan and Mount Mercy baseball teams each collected a goose egg on the defensive side of the ball when the two teams met up at Mapleleaf Athletic Complex on Wednesday evening.
The Tigers struggled in Game 1, falling 10-0. They got their revenge in Game 2, winning 2-0.
Cauy Massner was pitching a gem in Game 1 through five innings. He shut the Mustangs down for the first half of the ballgame, and the Tigers shared a scoreless tie heading into the sixth frame.
Mount Mercy knocked Massner out of the game in the sixth, plating seven runs to break the game open. The Mustangs would add two in the seventh.
Iowa Wesleyan had just four hits in Game 1, all singles.
The Tigers got another strong start in Game 2, this time out of Luis Ayesa. Ayesa threw seven shutout innings, giving up just four hits to help Iowa Wesleyan grind out a two-run victory.
Jackson Van Roekel knocked in Cristian Cordero with a second-inning fielder’s choice to put the Tigers up 1-0. In the third, Cordero sent in Carlos Vicente with an RBI double.
