The Iowa Wesleyan men’s and women’s soccer teams played in two different states against two different schools on Tuesday night, but both games had one thing in common. The Tigers’ opponents didn’t find the net.
Both Tiger squads earned shut out victories on the day. Iowa Wesleyan’s men’s team went south to Culver-Stockton College and knocked them off 2-0. The women shut down William Penn, 1-0.
In Canton, the Tiger men were tied with Culver-Stockton, 0-0, at halftime. Iowa Wesleyan scored its first goal in the 54th minute when Francisco Javier Sal sent one in off an assist by Thomas Mullen. Then, in the 85th minute, Nixon Valencia scored off an assist from Xavier Lozada.
The Tiger men outshot Culver-Stockton 11-5 on the day. Javier Sal and Julio Olmedo each had three shots on goal, and keeper Harrison Gailey saved all five shots he faced.
The women scored early as Bella Goodson. Desire’ Adams picked up the assist on that one.
There were some fireworks in the second half as William Penn’s India Foger was thrown out on a red card, but Iowa Wesleyan never scored again. The Tiger defense, however, stood tall, as keeper Kylie Mulhern-Guillier saved seven shots, and Cheleena Squibb saved one to combine for a shut out.
Baylee Alvarado led the Tiger women in shots on goal, with four. Izela Avalos and Jacqueline Campos both had one.
The Tiger men are now 3-9-1 overall this year. The women are now 7-5, and riding a five-game winning streak.
Both teams will head to Cedar Rapids over the weekend to play Bellevue University on Friday and Viterbo University on Sunday.
