CEDAR RAPIDS — The Iowa Wesleyan softball team headed up to Mount Mercy University on Tuesday for a doubleheader against the Mustangs.
It was a tough outing for the Tigers as they dropped back-to-back games, the first 8-0 and the second 9-6.
In the first of the two games, Mount Mercy wasted no time getting on the board.
The Mustangs kicked off the scoring with a two-run homer in the first inning and never looked back.
Iowa Wesleyan struggled to get any sort of offense going at the plate as the Tigers failed to get a single hit in the contest.
Alexis Davis was the lone Tiger to reach base off a walk as the Mustangs threw a no hitter in game one.
Mount Mercy went on to add six additional runs through the next two innings, scoring two in the second and four in the third to make it 8-0.
In game two, the Tigers were able to get some points on the board early.
Iowa Wesleyan struck first off a sacrifice bunt from Kelsey Topliff, which brought Kara Krieger across home plate.
Mount Mercy answered back with a run of its own in the bottom half of the inning, but the Tigers would follow with their largest inning of the day.
In the top of the second, the Tigers scored five runs.
The inning kicked off with a Julia Hill doubled to left, which scored Cydnee Hopkins. In the next at bat Krieger reach first on an error, which scored Emma Haines and Jordan Lantz notched an two RBI single, bringing Krieger and Hill home.
The Tigers capped off the second with a Tegan Burbridge single to center field, which brought Lantz home making it 6-1.
Both squads went scoreless over the next two innings, but in Iowa Wesleyan’s case it wouldn’t score again the rest of the way out.
Meanwhile, the Mustangs cut the lead to three, 6-3, after the fifth inning and then brought a whopping six runs home, which included a three-run homer, in the sixth to take the lead 9-6.
The Tigers could never get the runs needed to take back the lead.
Jordan Lantz ended with two RBIs to lead the Tigers with a two-run single in the top of the second inning. Kara Krieger, Kelsey Topliff, Tegan Burbridge, and Julia Hill all had RBIs as well.
