FULTON, Mo. — The Iowa Wesleyan softball team took one of two in Saturday’s St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference road game at Westminster. The Tigers shut the Blue Jays out 3-1 in Game 1, but fell 8-2 in Game 2.
Morgan Christner was dominant in Game 1 for the Tigers. Iowa Wesleyan’s senior ace gave up just six hits in a shutout effort, striking out eight Blue Jays in the win.
The Tiger offense took a while to get going. Through four innings, the opener was scoreless.
Iowa Wesleyan finally broke through in the top of the fifth inning. Ashley Pfadenhauer had the big hit, driving home a run on an RBI single.
The Tigers added a couple of insurance runs in the top of the sixth. Alex Eyman singled home one run, and Taylor Johnson brought one in on a sacrifice fly.
Eyman and Yessenia Munoz each went 2-for-3 in Game 1. Kara Kreiger had the Tigers’ only extra-base hit, with a double.
The Tigers held an early 2-0 lead in Game 2, scoring twice in the top of the first. Leadoff hitter Kayla Ford reached base on error and scored on a wild pitch, and Ivy Geerdes knocked in a run with an RBI double.
The Blue Jays, however, scored the next eight runs. Westminster put up one run in the first inning, four in the third, one in the fourth and two in the fifth.
Geerdes went 2-for-3 in Game 2, the only Tiger with multiple hits. Abby Dameron took the loss in the circle, giving up eight runs (seven earned) on 12 hits and three walks, while striking out one batter.
The Tiger softball team is now 4-8 overall and 3-3 in conference play.
