LAWRENCEVILLE, Georgia. - The Iowa Wesleyan women’s soccer team made school history over the weekend as the Tigers competed in the first Continental Athletic Conference tournament since the University joined the league.
Unfortunately for Tiger soccer fans, the tournament ended in a shut out loss. Top-seeded Georgia Gwinnett College knocked Iowa Wesleyan out 6-0 on Friday.
Iowa Wesleyan had worlds of trouble with Georgia Gwinnett’s Joy Mertzig. Mertzig scored a hat trick in the first half, burning the Tigers for three goals in the first 25 minutes.
Gwinnett’s first goal came off a corner kick in the fourth minute. She scored her second in the 19th minute and won a 1-on-1 with Tiger keeper Cheleena Squibb in the 25th.
Georgia Gwinnett led 3-0 at halftime and added three more in the second half. Addie Adame, Ashley Donselaar and Ana Da Costa all scored for the Grizzlies.
The Tiger women had just two shots in the loss, one by Giovana Pedrassi that wound up on goal, and one by Jacqueling Ivers, which did not.
Squibb faced 15 shots on goal in the game, and saved nine of them.
The Tiger women finished the season 5-11-1. They scored a huge 2-1 victory over Waldorf University on October 21, which gave them the fourth seed in the CAC tournament.
Georgia Gwinnett would roll in the CAC title game to earn their fifth conference tournament win in a row. The Grizzlies, who are currently getting votes in the NAIA women’s soccer poll, will be playing in the national tournament.
Coach Chris Gaskin and the Tiger women’s soccer program will kick back off next fall when the 2022 season rolls around.
