Iowa Weseleyan's baseball season came to an end this weekend with four final games. The Tigers lost their last two SLIAC games 15-2 and 8-3 against Spalding University on Saturday, and fell 4-3 and 6-0 at Central College on Sunday.
The Tigers had their hands full on Saturday with first-place Spalding looking to lock up the regular season conference championship. The Golden Eagles put the pressure on early, scoring two runs in the second inning and three in the third to take a 5-0 advantage.
IW cut the lead to three runs on a Nick Salas home run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Salas blasted a two-run shot to left to cut the Spalding lead to 5-2. Unfortunately for IW, it was all downhill from there.
Spalding put up eight runs in the top of the fifth inning and added two int he sixth. The IW offense didn't score another run.
The Tigers had just five hits in game one against Spalding. Chazz Brown went 2-2 with a walk and a stolen base to lead the IW offense.
Charles Shockley started the game and took the loss. He threw 4.1 innings and gave up nine runs (six earned) on eight hits and four walks.
The IW offense continued to struggle in a wet and windy game two. The Golden Eagles scored one run each in the first and second innings to take an early 2-0 lead, and added three runs each in the sixth and seventh to stretch the advantage to 8-0.
The Tigers were able to make the best of their last inning at Mapleleaf. Brown sent a two-run homer to left field and Jacob Leonard followed with a solo bomb to give the Tigers back-to-back long balls.
Brown finished 1-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Leonard went 1-3 with an RBI and a run.
Everett Swinson was tagged with the loss, giving up five runs (four earned) on four hits and three walks, while striking out two batters over six innings.
The Tigers suffered a walk-off loss on game one Sunday. Central scored two runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to spike a win.
IW scored first on an Antoine Miller RBI double in the first inning. Central scored two in the second but Tavaras Williams tied the game with an RBI double of his own in the top of the fourth.
Miller knocked in another run on the top of the sixth inning, plating one on an RBI groundout. The Tigers led 3-2 heading into the final frame.
The Tigers were one out away from the win in the bottom of the seventh. IW had two outs with a runner on first after the third batter of the frame. Central eventually walked the bases loaded, and then tied the game on a walk. Central's Tanner Wood ended the game with an RBI single through the right side to win the game 4-3.
The Tigers ended the game with three hits. Miller went 1-2 with two RBIs and a run scored to lead the team.
Joe Morrison started and pitched five innings in game one Sunday. He gave up two earned runs on six hits and one walk, while striking out two batters. Minami Matsumoto came in for one and two-thirds innings of relief, and Devillier was on the mound for the last three batters.
IW was shut out in game two, collecting only three hits in the loss. Central scored one run in the first inning, one in the fourth, and two each in the fifth and sixth.
Miller, Brown and Leonard each had one hit. Clayton Lathen took the loss on the mound, giving up five innings on four runs (three earned) on five hits and five walks, while striking out three batters.
IW fell to 8-30-1 to end the season. They finished 6-16 in the conference, which put them in ninth place.
