Tigers rout Trojans with 16 runs through nine innings

HANNIBAL, Mo — The Iowa Wesleyan baseball team put together a pristine performance on Wednesday afternoon on the road at Hannibal-LaGrange.
For the Tigers, the game was hardly ever in doubt as they downed the Trojans 16-3.
Iowa Wesleyan wasted no time putting points on the board as the Tigers scored in just the first inning.
Julian Figueroa singled between second and first to bring David Amaya home from second. Amaya got to second with a single himself and a steal from first.
In the next at-bat, Figueroa advanced to second on a wild pitch and Sage Bonner doubled to right center, scoring Figueroa and putting the Tigers up 2-0.
The Trojans were held scoreless through their half of the first and both squads went without a run in the second.
In the top half of the third, the Tigers added two more run to their total with Amaya tallying an RBI single to bring Carlos Vicente home and move Sucre Guzman to second.
Vicente was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Guzman singled to right advancing Vicente to third.
Bonner delivered once again in the next at-bat, this time tripling down the right field line to score Guzman.
In the bottom half of the inning, Hannibal-LaGrange scored two themselves off an two run home run.
An inning later, Iowa Wesleyan increased its lead even more.
Vicente, picked up a pair of RBIs on an RBI single that scored Holvin Catala and Philip Guerrero.
Guzman stepped up to the plate in the following at-bat and brought the third run across home on a single to center field.
The Tiger defense was efficient once again in the bottom half of the inning as the Trojans went three up three down.
After a scoreless fifth, the Tigers put together their best inning at the plate.
With three on and two outs, Amaya found contact with the ball again hammering it to right center and scoring three in the process, which included Guzman, Vicente and Guerrero.
Figueroa then doubled the next at-bat to bring Amaya home.
After Bonner hit a sacrifice fly in the following at-bat, Froymer Ortega singled into right field to bring the Tigers fifth run home in Figueroa.
Iowa Wesleyan held onto a 12-2 run heading into the bottom of the inning.
The Tigers got out of the sixth after facing just four batters and kept the game at bay through the next two innings, while giving up just one run in the bottom half of the seventh.
In the top of the ninth, with a 12-3 advantage, the Tigers added some insurance with an additional four runs. Derek Marrufo, Guzman and Amaya all notched RBIs, highlighted by a Guzman triple that brought two home.
Leading the Tigers on the day was Amaya, who went 5-6 at the plate and finished with five RBIs. Guzman finished with three, while Vicente, Figueroa and Bonner all had two. Ortega and Marrufo each had one.
Tiger baseball will be back in action on Friday as they will head to Paragould, Arkansas to face off with Crowley’s Ridge College. The game is set to begin at 1 p.m.
