In Tuesday's men's soccer action, Iowa Wesleyan traveled to Cornell College for a non-conference contest. After dropping three matches last week, the Tigers were looking to start this week off on a different note. Iowa Wesleyan scored late in the second half to tie the game but gave up a goal to the Rams just shy of two minutes later to suffer a 2-1 loss.
The Tigers started the match off by attacking the Cornell defense. IW took four shots in the opening period before the Rams were finally able to take a shot. Iowa Wesleyan was called for a foul that resulted in a penalty kick for Cornell. Chris Rimmer saved the initial shot but was unable to save the follow up shot off the rebound.
The rest of the half saw the Tigers take two shots, while Cornell finished with three more shots. Both teams failed to capitalize on the shots as the half would end without another goal. Chris Rimmer ended the first half with four saves against the Rams.
Iowa Wesleyan had the advantage on shots taken in the second half. They finished the period with nine shots compared to Cornell's four shots. The Tigers took seven shots before Miguel Domenech was finally able to find the back of the net with 83:45 on the clock. Fabian Arvizu earned the assist on the tying goal.
The tie did not last long as Cornell answered with a goal just shy of two minutes later. The goal proved to the game winner with the Tigers final shot ending in a save by the Cornell goalie. Rimmer added one save in the second half of play, finishing with a total of five on the night.
Francisco Saldana had a team high, two shots on goal, while five other Tigers took one shot on goal a piece.
With the loss, Iowa Wesleyan is now 2-5-1 on the season. Up next for the Tigers is a non-conference match against Olivet on September 22 at 3pm at East Lake Park.
