BURLINGTON — It wasn’t a perfect day on the golf course for the Iowa Wesleyan men and women's golf teams with rain flying at the Continental Athletic Conference golf championship in Burlington on Tuesday, but the Tigers still put on a well rounded performance.
Led by former Mt. Pleasant preps, the Tiger men finished second in the tournament. The women were also led by former area high school golfers to a fourth-place finish.
For the boys, Mt. Pleasant alum Trace White finished with the lowest score on the day. White capped off his tournament with a 237 score, good enough for sixth overall.
Fellow former Panther prep Brevin Wilson capped off his tournament with a low of 240. His scored notched him an eighth place finish.
“I could have been better,” Wilson said. “Having a couple bad holes will do that to you. Overall, getting eight place out of 36 guys you cant really complain for your freshman season.”
Bailey Shelledy, another former Panther, tied for 11th after shooting a 253 on the day. Colton Sherwood followed with a 13th place finish after golfing 255 and Kenny Tucker was the final Tiger finishing 15th with a 263.
“I thought we did fine as a team,” Wilson said. “We had some of our best scores of the spring. It helped that a lot of us had played the course before. It’s a course that we were familiar with and we stacked up well as a team. It was a good way to finish out the season.”
With three guys in White, Wilson and Shelledy that played together in high school, its great to be on the same team again Wilson said.
“It’s great,” he said. “It creates an interesting dynamic. Sometimes people go to college expecting to meet new people, but when you come in with that sense of familiarity it eases the tension. It makes you more comfortable.”
On on the women's side, Aubrey Duncan of Columbus Junction posted the lowest score of the tournament. Duncan finished ninth with a 172 in two rounds.
Michal Wohlleber of Mt. Pleasant finished 18th with 191. Claire Hanson shot a 196 for 20th and Karli Kirchner rounded out the Tigers with a 201 for 23rd.
With no first place finish, the Tigers season is now complete. They will return to the course next fall.
