Tigers win opener against Statesmen, fall in second

OSKALOOSA — The Iowa Wesleyan softball team grabbed win number eight on Tuesday night on the road at William Penn University.
Along with victory, the Tigers also suffered defeat at the hands of the Statesmen.
In the first of a back-to-back, the Tigers were winners 4-2 and in the final game of the night they were losers 1-5.
In the opening matchup, both teams went scoreless through one inning, but the Tigers followed with what would be the game winning inning.
Iowa Wesleyan’s Alexis Davis kicked off the second inning with a leadoff double to right.
After the first out of the inning, Karoline Stratton singled up the middle of the field to moved Davis to third.
In the next at-bat, Kylie Topliff grounded out to third base, but Davis was able to score and Stratton advanced to third in the process.
Kara Krieger delivered another big hit in the next at-bat as she tripled to right, scoring Stratton and making it 2-0.
Iowa Wesleyan hit another triple in the next trip to the plate, this time from Julia Hill. Krieger scored on the play.
Aspyn Harrison would bring the final Tiger run home with an RBI single, scoring Hill and making it 4-0.
The Tigers would never score again in the game.
William Penn got a pair of runs in the fourth off an error and RBI groundout.
That’s all the damage the Statesmen would cause.
Hill led the Tigers with two hits in the game. Krieger, Harrison, Davis and Stratton all had one hit. Topliff, Harrison, Hill and Krieger each had one RBI.
Harrison took the win in the circle with seven innings pitched, giving up nine hits, two runs (two earned) and three strikeouts.
In game number two, the Tigers one and only run came in the first inning.
After a fly out to start the game, Julia Hill doubled to deep right and Aspyn Harrison singled to advance Hill to third.
Jordan Lantz brought home the run in the next at-bat with a sacrifice fly.
Iowa Wesleyan held William Penn scoreless through the bottom half of the inning.
Both teams went scoreless over the next two innings, but the Statesmen scored in three straight inning after.
William Penn tied it in the fourth with the bases loaded on an RBI single.
They added three more in the bottom of the fifth with one off a single and two more off a pair of errors, making it 4-1.
The final run of the game came off a solo home run in the sixth.
Hill finished with a pair of hits in the game. Krieger, Harrison and Davis all had one hit. Lantz had the Tigers lone RBI.
The Tigers move to 8-18 on the season.
