EUREKA, Ill. - Iowa Wesleyan volleyball was one set away from upsetting Spalding University in a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Eureka College on Friday night. The Tigers, however, let a 2-0 lead slip away, as Spalding stormed back to win the next three sets to take the Tigers down 3-2 (19-25, 22-25, 25-15, 25-22, 10-15.)
It was a tough result for a squad that won its season opener but has dropped seven matches since.
Malieokekai DeMate led the Tigers with 16 kills in the loss. Emily Gehring added seven. Skylar Garcille and Anna Leidl each finished with six.
Lindsay Fernandez had 23 assists on the night to lead Iowa Wesleyan. Jenny Murphy had 35 digs, and DeMate added to her already big night with 23 digs of her own.
The Tigers had nine service errors to five service aces. Fernandez and Murphy finished the night with two aces apiece, and DeMate had one.
Iowa Wesleyan is now 1-7 on the year, which is made up of all conference games. The Tigers will be at Blackburn College on Wednesday night.
