The Westminster women's basketball team is one of the favorites in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, and the Tigers showed why on Saturday in Ruble Arena. Westminster knocked off Iowa Wesleyan 103-61 in game one of a home doubleheader for the Tigers.
IW trailed 21-11 after one quarter and 46-22 at halftime. Westminster scored a ridiculous 37 points in the third quarter and 57 combined in the second half to run away with the win.
The Blue Jays went 18-39 from three-point land in one of the best shooting displays seen by the IW crowd this season. IW head coach Jack Bruns gave the Blue Jays credit, but said a lot of it was on the Tiger defense.
'Westminster is an incredible team and they're playing really well right now,” Bruns said after the game. 'They did shoot a very high percentage from three, but a lot of them were uncontested. A lot of it is on them for making the shots, (but) a lot of it is on us for not being there and rotating well.”
Darby Massner scored 16 points and pulled down six rebounds to lead the team. Allie Massner scored 15 points, including three shots from three-point land, nad Harriet Fowler scored 14 points.
Deericka Martin and Da'Jaah Swolley scored four points apiece in the loss. Sarah Kavanh had three. Emily Hammel and Madison Scholl scored two points each, and Jordanne Mickley scored one.
The Tigers fell to 3-11 overall and 2-6 in SLIAC play. They are back in action today (Monday) at Fontbonne University in a makeup game, which began at 1 p.m.
