MT. PLEASANT — If one thing is for sure, it’s that anyone who matches up with the Iowa Wesleyan women’s wrestling team is going to have a tough time pulling out a win.
On Friday, Feb. 18, the Tigers faced off against Central Methodist University. The Tigers defeated the Eagles handily, 22-5, in their final home dual of season.
Out of the six matches wrestled on the mat, Iowa Wesleyan fell in just one.
“We had a pretty good night overall,” Iowa Wesleyan assistant coach Jake Kadel said. “We are just hoping we can get a full lineup and that would be a little bit better. We have the lineup we’re just waiting for next year. Overall, I would say it was a real good night. For our girls to show up and put on a dominant performance. All kudos to them. They’ve been working their butts off.”
In was all the Tigers straight out of the gates.
Following a double forfeit at 101 pounds, Mia Palumbo,109, got Iowa Wesleyan started with a fall in two minutes and twenty four seconds.
At 115, both teams forfeited.
To begin her contest at 123, Zoi Smith was in a neck-and-neck battle, but Smith was eventually bested by tech fall, 14-4. Smith’s loss was the Tigers only one of the night. Thanks to her performance, Iowa Wesleyan was able to come out with a point and a 6-4 lead.
Joanna Vanderwood took care of business, getting the second win of the evening with a 14-4 tech fall.
The next three Tigers, Destiny Campbell, Adaugo Nwachukwu, and Abi Archibald were all flawless on the mat.
All three came away with 10-0 tech fall victories, Campbell at 136, Nwachukwu at 143 and Archibald at 155.
At 170 and 191, neither team sent wrestlers to the mat, sealing an Iowa Wesleyan win.
Next up, the Tigers will participate in the Heart of American Conference tournament in Baldwin City, Kansas on Feb. 26.
“Next week we’re going to have our eye on the prize,” Kadel said. “We got the conference tournament and when we get that going, we’re going to have our sights set on the National Championships.”
