The Iowa Wesleyan women put the game away early on Tuesday night. The Tigers pummeled Principia from the opening Tip-Off and beat the Panthers 87-34, getting revenge from a loss earlier this season.
The Tigers jumped all over the Panthers in the first quarter. IW outscored Principia 26-4 in the opening 10 minutes, helped out by a 16-point first quarter from Darby Massner, which included four shots from three-point land.
The Panthers played the Tigers a lot closer in the second quarter, but IW still outscored Principia by two points in the period and took a 44-20 lead into the break.
IW continued to pour it on in the second half. The Tigers won the third quarter 19-8 and the fourth quarter 24-6 to close out their most decisive win of the season.
'I think what was different this game vs. last was that we hit shots,” Tiger head coach Jack Bruns said. 'That's a huge thing. When we hit shots, we feel really good about ourselves, and we get down and defend like we should and rebound like we should. When we don't hit shots, that's when we struggle. Our biggest thing there was that we went on a bit of a run and knocked down some shots, and that really boosted our confidence.”
Darby finished the game with 32 points and 14 rebounds, both of which led the team. Allie Massner had a nice game of her own, scoring 17 points pulling down 13 rebounds.
Madison Scholl had 10 points in the win. Jordanne Mickley had nine. Claire Hanson scored six. Harriet Fowler had five points and four assists. Deericka Martin and Sarah Kavanh scored three points apiece, and Emily Hammel scored two.
IW moved to 4-14 overall with the win. They'll look to improve on their 2-9 SLIAC record on Saturday, Feb. 2, when they hit the road to face Blackburn College.
