ST. YORK, Neb. — The Iowa Wesleyan Women’s Wrestling team traveled to Nebraska on Saturday to compete at the York College Open.
Three Tigers finished within the top five in the competition.
At 101 pounds, Alaina Sunlin picked up a second place finish. Sunlin won by technical fall, 10-0, in her first two matches. In the third, she pinned her opponent, sending her to the final. In the championship match, Sunlin wrestled hard, but fell in a close 15-13 decision.
Joanna Vanderwood competed for Iowa Wesleyan at 130 pounds. She finished her first match with a 14-3 tech fall and her second with a pin. Vanderwood was pinned in her third match, but bounced back with a 12-0 tech fall win to give herself a chance at third. In the third place match, Vanderwood fell by tech fall, 10-0.
The final wrestler was Adaugo Nwachukwu at 143. She grabbed a tech fall win, 10-0, in round one, and went on to pin her next two challengers, sending her to the final. Nwachukwu put up a good fight, but fell by decision, 6-2, giving her a second-place finish.
Next up for the Tigers, they will compete in a triangular against Augsburg and Jamestown on Saturday Jan. 29 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
