DAVENPORT ? Elliot Armstrong hit four doubles and drove in six runs to lead a hitting barrage by the Iowa Wesleyan College baseball team in a 15-3 win over St. Ambrose University Monday night in Midwest Collegiate Conference play.
The Tigers hammered the Bees? pitching for 21 hits, scoring early and often to defeat the team currently sitting first in the MCC standings. IWC clinched the series against SAU this year and moved back into a tie with Waldorf College for fourth in the conference standings with an 11-10 league record (18-29 overall).
Wesleyan built a 9-0 lead after four innings and led 15-0 in the sixth, scoring in each of the first six innings while facing three different St. Ambrose pitchers.
Armstrong led the way, going five-for-seven in the game and scoring three runs. He hit a two-run single in the second inning to give IWC a 5-0 lead, then added two-run doubles in both the third and fifth innings. He had five hits in his first five at bats and was one of six players with multiple hits for the Tigers.
Ryan Doeppel had four hits and drove in four runs, while Corey Amerson and Bobby Lloyd both added three hits each. Christian Arredondo and Marco Prieto each recorded a pair of hits as well.
Starting pitcher Jacob Sanchez cruised to the win, going just five innings and allowing one hit while striking out four before giving way to Michael Rosa and Marcus Ledbetter. The two relievers combined to allow three runs and three hits over four innings as St. Ambrose (22-22 overall) mustered just four hits in the game.
Iowa Wesleyan closes out the regular season with a three-game series at Viterbo (Wis.) University in La Crosse, Wis., starting with a nine-inning game Friday and concluding with a doubleheader Saturday.
