GREENVILLE, Ill. ? The Iowa Wesleyan men?s and women?s soccer teams traveled to Greenville, Ill., on Tuesday to take on the Greenville College Panthers.
The Tiger men fell by a close, 3-2 score and the women were routed, 9-1.
The women played first, and both sides were fighting for their first win of the season.
The Panthers struck first, and with eight minutes left in the first half, they led 3-0.
The Tigers made up some ground when Savanna Blair scored the team?s first goal of the season to make the score 3-1 at half.
But after the half, the Panthers stepped up their offense and scored quickly. The Tigers had no answer for the attacking Panthers, allowing six more goals and scoring none of their own.
The Tiger women fall to 0-4 on the season and travel to Westminster College in Fulton, Mo., to take on the Blue Jays Thursday at 5 p.m.
The IWC men?s team also played the Panthers on Tuesday. The Tigers took a scoreless draw into the second half. Neither team had much offense going in the first half; the Tigers managed just two shots on goal.
The Panthers struck first in the second half, scoring two quick goals. The Tigers? Chris Matthews answered with a goal 11 minutes into the half to cut the Panther lead to one. Three minutes later Greenville scored again. Iowa Wesleyan?s Caio Da Costa, the team?s top scorer so far this year, then added another goal to make the score 3-2.
Costa also put the ball in the net late in the game but he was called for being offsides and the goal did not count.
The Tigers couldn?t make anything happen in the last few minutes, and the game ended in a 3-2 Panther victory.
The Tigers fall to 0-3 on the season and will also take on Westminster College Thursday night in Fulton.
