FAIRFIELD — The Fairfield basketball teams had their hands full on Friday night, welcoming in a couple of red-hot Keokuk squads that sit in first place in the Southeast Conference in both boys and girls basketball.
A couple of ridiculous scoring performances led to two more wins for the Chiefs. Keokuk star Jaxon Clark finished with 51 points and 20 rebounds in the boys’ game, while Kendra Boatman put up 31 on the girls’ side, as the Trojans took an 88-54 in the boys’ game, and a 63-19 defeat in the girls’.
It was a competitive first half on the boys’ side, but the Trojans didn’t close out well in the second quarter, and Keokuk pushed to a 40-24 lead at the halftime break.
The Chiefs smelled blood in the water in the second half, putting up 48 total points in the final two quarters. Fairfield was unable to outscore Keokuk in any of the four periods.
Fairfield was led by Ethan Bisgard’s 12-point, three-steal game. Eli Zillman had 10 points before fouling out. Andrew Myers finished with 11 points, five rebounds and two steals to give the team three double-digit scorers.
Brock Atwood and Rowan Kness each scored five points in the loss. Axl Starr finished with four points. Nolan Smith had three, and both Jeremy Parker and Spencer McCready scored two.
After the game, Coach Nate Perkins talked about the struggle for his undersized team in stopping the 6-foot, 10-inch Clark.
“There’s not a lot you can do when you don’t have a lot of size, and you don’t stop the ball before it can get there,” said Perkins. “We did not do a good job of making sure he couldn’t do it.”
It was a similar struggle for the Trojan girls, who gave up 17 points to Boatman in the first quarter. The Trojan girls were down 25-9 after one quarter, 38-13 at halftime, and 59-17 after three quarters.
Emma Metcalf led the Trojans with nine points. Lauren Martin and Elyse Setterstrom scored four points each, and Anna McAvan finished with two.
The Trojan boys were done in 59-54 at Hillcrest Academy on Saturday night, and they’re now 1-5 overall and 1-2 in conference play. The Fairfield girls are 1-6 overall and 0-3 in the league.
