Keota, Cardinal move on, others out
Monday’s postseason volleyball roundup

The Class 1A and 2A volleyball postseason got underway on Monday night, and a handful of area’s teams battled for their chance in the next round.
The night saw Keota grit out a thrilling five-set win. Cardinal rolled, and a few others saw their seasons come to an end.
Keota 3, Lone Tree 2
The Eagles went head to head with Lone Tree in a five-set nail-biter to begin the Class 1A Region 7 tournament.
Keota rolled 25-16 in the first set, but Lone Tree hit back with a 25-22 win in the second set and a 25-23 win in the third.
Lone Tree fought back in the fourth, taking it 25-16, but Keota had enough gas in the tank late to win the fifth set, 15-9.
Cassandra Swantz led the way with 12 kills and 17 assists. Grace Conger had eight kills. Kimberly Clarahan finished with 34 digs, and Izzi Chalpua had 26 digs.
Keota will play at North Tama in Wednesday night’s quarterfinals.
English Valleys 3, Hillcrest Academy 0
The Ravens went on the road in Class 1A Region 7 action, but they couldn’t take down English Valleys.
The Bears knocked out Hillcrest Academy 25-15, 25-21 and 25-16.
Moravia 3, Pekin 0
After a tough first set loss, Pekin couldn’t recover in Moravia, falling in three sets in the Class 1A Region 8 tournament.
The Mohawks used momentum gained from a wild opener to take down the Panthers 28-26, 25-17, 25-22.
Notre Dame 3, New London 0
The Tigers traveled east to Burlington, where they fell in three sets in a Class 1A Region 8 battle.
Notre Dame got stronger as the night went on, as the Nikes beat the Tigers 25-22, 25-17, 25-15.
Alburnett 3, Columbus 1
After falling 25-17 in the opening set, Columbus battled back to tie it with a 25-15 set two victory, but Alburnett had what it took in the final two games.
The Pirates beat the Wildcats 25-21 and 25-22 in the final two sets to end Columbus’ season.
Lily Coil finished the night with 11 kills and 19 digs to lead Columbus. Daniela Diaz dished out a team-leading 29 assists.
Defensively, Jocelyn Hernandez coled the back line with 19 dgs. Aracely Garza finished with 18 digs, and both Diaz and Audrey Hoback each had 10.
Cardinal 3, Central Decatur 0
The Comets were on fire, beating visiting Central Decatur in straight sets during the Class 2A Region 8 tournament. Cardinal took sets 25-17, 25-21 and 25-20.
Emarie Finch finished the night with 10 kills. Kolbi Saner had eight kills, and both Megan and Emily Ward tallied 12 assists.
Brinlee Ostrander led the defense with 15 digs, and also had a huge night serving, going 100% on serve efficiency with five aces. Addison Adam collected 11 digs.
The Comets will head to West Burlington on Wednesday night.
