RIVERSIDE - It was a battle of scoring leaders Monday when Keota brought its boys basketball team to Highland High School.
Keota's JD Stout had 508 points this season and needed 24 to break the Eagles' single season scoring record. He had 25 by halftime and finished with 31.
Zack Lasek had the Highland career record of 1,173 points in his sights and scored 38 in the game.
'I think he got that record, but I want to check and update everything first,” Highland coach Marcus Hall said.
The nonconference game was an 83-76 win for Keota.
There were 15 3-pointers in the first half, 10 by Keota of which five were from Stout. The Eagles led 21-17 after one quarter and 49-36 at intermission.
'That's what we do,” Keota coach Dan Stout said. 'We are shooters.”
'To give up that many points in a half when you are defending your home court, it is just embarrassing,” Hall said.
It was a 64-49 lead to start the fourth quarter and Keota expanded that to 75-55 with 4 minutes, 10 seconds left in the game.
Two 3-pointers from Mason McFarland and a timeout for Highland with 3:11 remaining left the score at 75-61. Another three and two free throws from McFarland preceded seven straight points from Lasek to cap an 18-0 run, and it was a 75-73 game.
'I wish halftime would have never came,” Coach Stout said.
'That run was all about defense,” Hall said.
McFarland set the school record for threes earlier this season. 'That run didn't surprise me,” Hall said. 'He is capable of that. We want him to be trigger-happy.”
'I think we got lackadaisical on defense and comfortable with our lead,” JD Stout said. 'I know I missed some easy bunnies. It was kind of scary the way they were hitting shots. At the end of the day, we got the job done.”
'That's how we need to play the whole game. We have to pin our ears back and be ready to compete from the beginning,” Hall said. 'It's good that we came back and it is a testament to how quick a game can change, but we have to compete before we're down double digits. A whole game has been a fleeting thing for us.”
Luke Hammen had 18 points for the Eagles and Preston McDonald 15. Austin Waterhouse added 12.
Keota is 12-7 and hosts English Valleys tonight.
'We got a big one against Belle Plaine Monday and if we can beat them, we'll win our side of the conference,” Coach Stout said.
Highland is 10-7 and hosts Lone Tree tonight.
McFarland finished with 22 after hitting 11 straight points. Trey Lasek had eight in his third game back after a foot injury.
'We are still learning how to play with him back in the lineup,” Hall said. 'But he is a great athlete. We will be ready for the postseason.”
