It was a huge day for the Washington wrestling team, as they wrapped up their final preparations before the postseason.
On Saturday, the Demons went to Fairfield for the annual Southern Iowa Classic, and for the first time, came away as the top overall team at the event, taking first place with a total of 192.5 points, outdistancing themselves from Keokuk (153.5) and Fort Madison (130) on the day.
To go with the team title, 10 different Demons took home third place or better, and all of those who competed found themselves on the podium of the 12 team tournament.
Leading the charge for the Demons were a pair of first-place finishers, coming from freshman Walker Ikerd, who picked up a 6-3 decision over Fort Madison?s Ryan Steffensmeier in the seminfinal match, before taking a 10-5 decision in the championship round to claim the 113-pound title.
The other weight-class winner was junior Trey Van Weelden (152 pounds), who advanced to the title match after a pair of pin falls, before claiming the title with a 6-3 decision over Fort Madison?s Clayton Poe.
David Hora (120 pounds), Andrew Waite (126 pounds), Kyle Anderson (132 pounds), Austin Hazelett (138 pounds), Tristan Westphal-Edwards (160 pounds) and Karlton Skubal (182 pounds), each claimed second place at the tournament, while Ben Bohr (106 pounds) and Michael Ellingson (145 pounds) both took third place.
