MT. PLEASANT - Mt. Pleasant senior Keegan Kohorst signed his letter of intent to attend and play football at St. Ambrose University on Friday. Kohorst signed his letter in the Mt. Pleasant High School media center surrounded by friends, family and coaches.
Kohorst says St. Ambrose fit exactly what he was looking for, a chance to stay close to home and to pick a school where he could see himself playing early.
'I was looking for a place near home, where my family could come and watch me,” Kohorst said. 'And I was looking for a place that felt like home and that I could contribute early to the team.”
Though undersized, Kohorst was able to play offense and defense line for Mt. Pleasant. Starting at the defensive end spot, Kohorst finished second in the team with 46.5 tackles and also finished with four solo tackles for a loss and three solo sacks. Kohorst is light enough to play linebacker, making him the perfect utility player for the Panther defense.
'That's all amazing that he can do all of those things, but his best attributes are actually his leadership and his work ethic,” said Mt. Pleasant head coach Shawn Striegel. 'There was hardly a practice where he wasn't the last person to leave the field. He was hitting dummies. He was doing extra running work, and people gravitated to him because of that leadership.”
Kohorst will be joining a Fighting Bees team that finished 4-5 overall last year and 4-2 in conference play.
Kohorst follows older brother Kieran down the path to college football. Kieran, a 2017 graduate, plays for Drake University, and Keegan credits him for showing little brother the way.
'He's indescribable,” Kohorst said. 'He's my best friend. He pushed me throughout my whole high school career, and taught me so many things in my life. I can't thank him enough for what he's done.”
