WINFIELD — Saturday’s Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division girls basketball game between Winfield-Mount Union and Hillcrest Academy went right down to the buzzer, and at the end it was the Wolves celebrating on the court.
WMU staged a late comeback to down Hillcrest 43-42, earning a conference win on their own home floor.
“They came together when we needed it the most,” said Wolves’ head coach Mendy McCreight. “They played to the end and defended to the end like we needed to.”
WMU won the game on three late points by sophomore star Madisen Kellogg. Kellogg tied the game up on a put-back layup with 40 seconds on the clock, and after a Ravens miss and foul, she made the back end of a two-shot free throw attempt with 5.6 ticks on the clock.
“She has done a tremendous job coming in as a sophomore,” McCreight said. “There is a lot of pressure on her, but she handles it well.”
Hillcrest Academy had two separate looks in the final five seconds, but both shots rimmed out.
“We played hard,” said Hillcrest head coach Mitchell Drey. “At the end of the game, we had a couple of possessions where we went a little too quick on the offensive end, and we didn't try taking away their stuff on the defensive end, and they capitalized.”
Drey was coaching against wife Emily Drey, who is an assistant for WMU. The two former Iowa Wesleyan basketball players faced each other for the third time, having played twice last season.
“For us, we're kind of used to it now,” Drey said. “After the game, we're back to husband and wife, but for that little brief window, we're coach and assistant coach. Last year was a lot weirder.”
Kellogg finished the game with 23 points, 0 rebounds and three steals to lead WMU. Pacey Schlee had eight points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Lily Freeman scored six points. Kaylynn Kellogg had four, and Maggie Hutton scored two.
Hillcrest Academy’s Claire Withrow finished the night with 18 points. Malia Yoder scored 15 points. Niva Helmuth put up six. Delaney Shaw scored three points, and also led the Ravens with 12 rebounds and five steals.
Both teams were coming off losses the night before. WMU fell 53-38 against Wapello, and Hillcrest Academy dropped a 39-35 game to Louisa-Muscatine.
